Spring Ball

On Saturday 13th April the Rotarians held their Spring Ball in the Royal Gibraltar Yacht Club. The evening was well attended. Among the guests were Commodore and Mrs Clink, Father Mark Jackson, Command Chaplain of British Forces Gibraltar and his wife, Mayor Anthony Lima and his wife Carmen, Captain of the Port , Mr Roy Stanbrook, his wife and of course Mrs Emily Adamberry-Olivero, Director of Gibraltar Clubhouse Project.
It was an evening of elegance and style with good food and wine. Entertainment included Casino style table games with many prizes generously donated by several local restaurants and businesses to whom Rotary is very grateful. Everyone enjoyed dancing to the music and singing of Peter Charles until the early hours of the morning. All funds raised from the evening will be donated to Mental Health Charities in Gibraltar.

One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award to Ms. Penny Pilley

“Commodore and Mrs Clink, your Worship and Mrs Lima, Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to our special charity event in aid of Mental Health. Also a special welcome to our friends from the Rotary Club of Bromley. I hope you are all enjoying yourselves so far.

Tonight is a very special occasion for one of our club members although they don’t yet know it. They are about to receive a Paul Harris Fellowship Award.

Paul Harris, with three business colleagues, was the founder of Rotary in 1905. His vision being to form a Club that would encourage fellowship amongst the business community. Little did these four men realise that they had created the first Rotary Club. The name Rotary was derived from the early practice of rotating meetings amongst members’ offices.

Today there are 1.2 million members in 200 different countries throughout the world in 34,000 clubs. In 1957 the Paul Harris Fellowship was established in his honour to express appreciation to persons who have contributed outstanding service to the Rotary cause.

Penny, the Rotary Club of Gibraltar recognises your outstanding service as our Club Secretary. You have gone over and above your position as secretary working tirelessly on behalf of the club, often burning the candle at both ends for the benefit of us all. Penny’s approach to any problem is “nothing is too much trouble”.

Therefore, it gives me great pleasure to present to you on behalf of the Trustees of Rotary Foundation, the emblems of a Paul Harris Fellow which are the certificate and a lapel pin together with a “gong” from the Club.

Ladies and gentlemen, please congratulate the newest Paul Harris Fellow – Penny.”
